MFC's Introduction to 'Hotspots'
MFC have for some time recognised the need to incoporate into our website a database of National Wi-Fi Hotspots, which we hope will sit alongside our already well established & used 'Campsites with Wi-Fi' information.
Wi-fi allows you to connect to the net at broadband speeds without cables, as long as you have a wireless enabled device, and in most cases, a regular internet service provider and a wi-fi account.
Hotspots use wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi). They broadcast a standard wireless frequency (up to 100 metres) that connects your equipment to the location's internet connection. It's that simple!
You'll find Wi-Fi hotspots in a wide range of locations including airport lounges and terminals, bars and pubs, BT payphones, cafés/coffee shops, city centres, clubs, colleges, conference centres and exhibition venues, health clubs, hotels, law courts, libraries, museums, motorway service stations, railway stations, restaurants, shopping areas/stores, town halls and universities.
Many businesses in an attempt to lure custom are offering free Wi-Fi connection, this includes a recent announcement that free Wi-Fi is available in all of McDonalds Restaurants, other businesses like KFC and Starbucks etc are expected to follow. Norwich Council has already announced it will introduce free Wi-Fi connections throughout the city, many other City Councils are expected to do the same.
You can recognise a BT Openzone Wi-Fi hotspot by its BT Openzone sign as shown above. If you can't see a BT Openzone or BT Openzone network partner sign, simply start your wireless device and view available wireless networks to see if you're in range. BT Openzone have throughout the UK 190,000 Hotspots.
Wireless (Wi-Fi) broadband internet access from BT Openzone is brought to you by many recognisable partners such as BAA airports, Caffè Nero, Hilton hotels, Thistle Hotels and Welcome Break.
You don't have to actually be in a hotspot!
You don't necessarily need to be in a hotspot to use BT Openzone – you could just be in range. For example, you might pick up a BT Openzone signal from a café (which might not actually be a hotspot) that's simply near a BT payphone.
We hope you find this information useful.
Should you find any errors, or know of any Wi-Fi Hotspot not listed here, please let us know.
